Week twelve Cross Country

Handicappers show no mercy

Excitement filled the air at Margaret Lewis Reserve on Saturday July 13 for the much awaited running of the Yarra Ranges Athletics Cross Country handicap. Athletes start based on a predetermined handicap time, the intention being that all athletes cross the line as near together as possible, at least that was the intention.

First up was the 500m event for the under 6’s. Sam Laven lead the field away and gave nobody a chance staying clear to lead in James de Schwartz, Braydon Shaw and Hunter Shaw. Tyden Keenan followed Sam’s example in the under 8’s 1000m leading from start to finish.  Next across the line was Zac Clarke followed closely by Jakob Pace and Alex van Duuren.  Backmarker, Maddie Laven, chased hard to be first girl over the line.

A big field of 13 athletes chased Brayden Woolridge in the under 9 and 10 1500m. Brayden showed the entire field a clean pair of heels to lead all the way. Zoe Ford chased hard to cross the line in first place followed by Mia Strudley. The under 11 and 12 2000m produced a close finish with back marker, Lily Peacock, chasing down the entire field to finish first. Second across the line, and first boy, was Jayden Clarke.

25 starters for the Open 3000m were led away by Erika Bedyn.  Line honours went to Tammarah Brown followed by Deb Woods(first open woman)and back marker Aiden Pace (first under 15 boy). Open men winner was Darren Ford.

Next week is the Club Cross Country Championships at Morrison Reserve. Races start at 9.00AM sharp so get there early to warm up for what is sure to be an excellent day of cross country racing.

A reminder for those that have not yet done so, entries for the State Little Athletics Cross Country Championships close soon.  Entries can only be made via the Little Athletics website ( ). Also keep watching the website for details of the Lake Fun Run on September 22nd. See you there!

Knox Open Day

One of the highlights of the cross country season is the Knox LAC open day.  A chance for the entire club to finally compete together as one, with all ages from under 6 to Open age competing at one venue. With region wide club bragging rights up for grabs it is always an intense day of competition, yet always finishes with plenty of smiles and no food on the BBQ. This year was no different with a huge team of athletes from Yarra Ranges converging on Norton Park, Wantirna to compete with many of the other clubs from around Eastern and South Eastern Melbourne.

Our only individual winner for the day was the ever impressive Georgia Laven in the 10 year girls 1500m.  Plenty of second and third placings including James Laven, Lily Peacock, Michael Clarke, Harrison van Duuren, Madeline Laven and Tess Patterson provided the stimulus needed for some outstanding team results.  Team medals to our 11 boys, Mens Open A & B, 13-15 Girls, Open Women and 9 year girls resulted in a close second overall for the club. A superb effort!

A big thanks to all those who competed this weekend, our team morale and camaraderie is the envy of many other clubs and is what makes Yarra Ranges Athletics such a fun club to run with. If you want to see what all the hype is about (and maybe test yourself against some of the best young athletes in Victoria) come down to our next event at Lillydale Lake this coming Saturday from 9.00AM.  With the club handicap only days away all club members  need to be there to give yourself a chance of a decent handicap.

23rd June 2013

Region Cross Country

Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes have had a very busy week with schools cross country championships, Athletics Victoria Cross Country Championships and Little Athletics Victoria Eastern Region Cross Country Championships.

Dave and Amanda Laven must be the proudest parents in the Yarra Valley this week. Three of their children winning gold medals at the LAV Eastern Region Cross Country Championships held at Ruffey Lake, Doncaster on Sunday. James Laven started the rout with a well-paced win in the 13 year boys 3km.  Next up was Maddie Laven with a dominant display in the 8 year girls 1500m. Finally, Georgia gave her competitors no chance, and the hares a scare, winning her 10 year girls 1500m. Other medallist’s were silver to Tess Patterson  in 12 year Girls 2km, silver to Lily Peacock in 11 year girls 2km and bronze to the 9 year Girls team of Olivia de Vincentis, Ashleigh Gasson, Mia Strudley, Tayja Maki, Taylah Tillotson and Claire Noonan. Well done to our club athletes who all competed exceptionally well.

Tuesday saw many club athletes competing for their school at the Eastern Region Schools Cross Country events at Yarra Glen. Big fields in all races made medals hard to come by, however Ryan Patterson (first  U17 Boys), Georgia Laven (second U11 Girls) and Lily Peacock (third U13 Girls) were our medallists.  Congratulations to all the other club members who represented their school.

Bundoora Park was the venue for the Athletics Victoria Cross Country Championships on Saturday.  Stand out performances were James Laven and Harrison van Duuren in the U14 boys race and Tess Patterson in the U14 girls. Andrew van Duuren continued his excellent season in the U16 boys 4km. Brian Ackerly’s 5th in the 50-55 grade led in our team in Mens 12km cross country championships followed by Michael Clarke, Andrew Butler, Jamie Strudley and Dave Laven. Our club is to be congratulated again on entering a team in our first year of Athletics Victoria competition.

Week Ten Cross Country

Round 10 saw us running at our spiritual home in Morrison Reserve on what was a rather fine morning, although the brisk air seemed to play havoc with the lung capacity hence pb's were minimal. Thank you to all our helpers for your input without all of you it would be a chore. Good luck to our team of runners heading to Region on Sunday I'm sure you will all do us proud, remember their is no Cross Country at our centre this week 22nd June.  Also don't forget Saturday 29th June is Knox Open Day  so no run at our centre we all go to Norton's Park to represent Yarra Ranges. Good luck to all our athletes running for school Cross Country on Tuesday please let us know how you go by emailing.

9th June 2013

Week Nine Cross Country

A frosty Margaret Lewis Reserve was the venue for round 9 of the Yarra Ranges Athletics cross country season.  Fortunately the cold did not deter the athletes with another exceptional turnout, 35 finishers in the open 3km.With school cross country championships imminent, we had some very  competitive fields. Stand out performances were from Madeline Laven, Camden Hewitson, Claire Noonan, Liam Russell, Oliver Duncan, Aiden Pace, Connor Thrall and Ruby Dixon.  Some notable PB’s from Graeme Woolridge, Jed Thrall, Dave Laven and Darren Ford showcased the improving talent in our open age ranks. We are looking forward to seeing the results from this at the school cross country champs on Tuesday, good luck to all members competing.

While all that fun was being had a small contingent of club athletes attended round 4 of the Athletics Victoria XCR13 season at Brimbank Park, Keilor, home of the infamous ‘Col de Brimbank’. Andrew van Duuren continued his superb season with an outstanding 6km in the Men’s U16. James Laven and Lily Peacock showed off their talents with excellent performance’s in the U14 4km races, both finishing in the top 10. Another solid performance from Michael Clarke and a welcome return from Adam Pepper in the men’s gruelling 16km rounded out another fine representation from Yarra Ranges Athletics at an Athletics Victoria event. The next AV XCR event is at Brimbank Park on June 22nd, a big contingent is expected with it also being the Victorian All Schools Cross Country Champs.

Next week we return to Morrison’s reserve, My Evelyn at 8.45am.

8th June 2013

Week Eight Cross Country

PB’s took centre stage (32 of them) this weekend at Round 8 of the Yarra Ranges Athletics Cross Country season.

The wet conditions did not deter competitors with another big turnout: 26 finishers in the Open 3km! James Laven took out the Open 3km race with a fine 11.17.  Other excellent performances in their respective races included Olivia Divincentis, Camden Hewitson , Harrison van Duuren, James Davidson and Brayden Shaw.

It was also pleasing to see so many of our more “experienced” competitors running PB’s.  Keep up the training or come to training with us at the Morrison’s Reserve Athletics Track from 6.00pm on Tuesday’s.

A big welcome to the new members this week, we are sure you enjoyed the run, rain and atmosphere.  We look forward to seeing you every week for the rest of the season.

Next week 8th june we are at Morrison Reserve, Coldstream, bring the family or a friend ready for a 9.00am start. Pick a distance from 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 2000m or 3000m (or do them all!). Our seniors will be competing at Brimbank Park, Keilor at the Athletics Victoria 10 Mile cross country championship, good luck to all members competing.

25th May 2013

Week Seven Cross Country

A week of school Cross Country events provided the opportunity for Yarra Ranges Athletics younger athletes to show off their talents in a dominate display of Cross Country performances. Congratulations to all the club members who have qualified for the next round of the school Cross Country championships program.  The club is exceptionally proud of the performances of all our athletes at these competitions and the respect shown to all other competitors.

The busy week of Cross Country culminated in an excellent turn out for Round 7 of the Cross Country season. A welcome addition to the fields this week were our friends from Cockatoo Athletics whom we look forward to seeing next time. PB’s again starred with 26 in all!

Our senior athletes trekked to Ballarat to compete in the Athletics Victoria 15km and 5km road races. Special mentions to Andrew van Duuren for his superb effort in the 5km and to our new member, Brian Ackerly, in the 15km.  Next week we are at Lilydale Lake.

Week Six Cross Country

A wet Margaret Lewis Reserve was the venue for Round 6 of the Cross Country season. The cool, drizzly conditions did not deter a big turnout of athletes from competing on an excellent cross country course. Many athletes took the opportunity to prepare for upcoming school cross country races which provided us with some interesting races and big fields…perfect practice.  Good luck to all the club members competing this week at their various school events. With chocolate frogs on offer again this week for PB’s, there were some excellent performances and lots of PB’s. Special mention needs to go the adults and parents who have been showing consistent improvement week to week.  Confirmation that every step you take makes you fitter, healthier and closer to another chocolate frog!

Next week we return to Morrison Reserve, Mt Evelyn and our Seniors travel to Ballarat for Round 3 of the Athletics Victoria XCR season.  Bring the family down for a 9.00am start. New members are always welcome,  See you there!

Senior AV Cross Country

Well today was an historic day for our club as we fielded teams in the Senior AV Cross country for the very first time, congratulations to all the runners you created history today and will be remembered for a long time to come.

Yarra Ranges Athletics Cross Country debut.

A warm, windy day greeted Yarra Ranges Athletics first ever team to compete in an Athletics Victoria Cross Country/ Road event.  Round 1 of the XCR13 season was the cross country relays at the pictures Jells Park.  Yarra Ranges fielded teams in the Men’s Open (Div 5), Men’s 40+, Men’s under 18, Men’s under 16, Men’s under 14 and Women’s under 14, a great representation for a first year club when many other more established athletics clubs in the eastern region struggled to field teams.

Star performers were Lily Peacock and Harrison van Duuren in the Women’s under 14 and Men’s under 14 respectively.  Lily finishing as the first under 14 (woman or man) and Harrison only 4 seconds behind, outstanding efforts for 2 young athletes competing against runners up to 2 years older than them.

A big thanks and congratulations to all club members who attended this event, and to Kate, Susan and Lynn for time keeping and officiating. Final results are not yet available however the best placed team is most likely the Men’s Open team in 4th place.  Official results in next week’s report.
